Yesterday and Today – A home away from home

In former times seamen were frequently exploited by keepers of lodgings and private agents hiring seamen, subordinating them to indebtednes. To prevent this, in 1984, shipowner and merchant Friedrich M. Vietor of Bremen founded a house in which sailors and sea-lads could put up and be taken care of during their stay ashore.
As of these beginnings originated the Bremer Seemannsmission (Seamen’s Mission of Bremen), as it is today.
The Seamen’s Mission of Bremen see their task in promoting the spiritual and physical well-being of seamen and personnel working on barges and river-craft - like rivers and lakes - to support these and assist them in church services.
Regardless of race, colour of skin or religion, during their time being in strange lands, each one seaman is to feel at home in the Seamen’s Home.
Favourable possibilities of staying overnight and providing food to seamen are offered, besides transfer by bus free-of-charge; acquiring international phone cards, changing currencies and having the in-house Seamen’s Club and several more.
